Sixto Heredia, president of the Spanish postal service Correos, alongside environmental advisor to the Government of Cantabria, Francisco Martin, have recently signed an agreement of collaboration on the promotion of the use of less polluting vehicles.

In particular, Correos will use more electrical bicycles and motorcycles in the postal distribution to reduce emossions and any contribution to the greenhouse effect. Cantabria is going to be the first area is Spain where Correos will be using non-polluting motorcycles for distribution.

The Council has contributed a million Euros to the development of the project, yielding a total of 20 motorcycles to Correos during a period of six months. In addition, Correos will be supporting the initiative with the introduction of three electrical vehicles, a van and two bicycles. If successful, the scheme could be extended throughout Spain.

In March 2008, Correos began to use electrical bicycles and vans in some areas of Spain as a first step towards EU plans to curb pollution and says it has a firm commitment towards reducing its environmental impact.

The Cantabrian Executive wants to add extend the 'Biobike Plan' to other services such as council services.
