The Romanian postal service announced yesterday that a proposal for the future of the service has been finalised and is being forwarded to the Romanian Ministry of Communications and Information.

The proposal will form the basis for further public debate and a framework for legislative change needed to ensure the service can compete in a more competitive market.

The plan will also be submitted to the National Authority for Administration and Regulation in Communications. The proposal was conceived as a result of the need to align Romanian legislation in existing European legislation. At present, postal services in Romania are regulated by Ordinance no. 31/2002 on postal services, approved with amendments by Law 642/2002.

General director of Romana Posta, Marius Vatavu, warned last week that there was a threat to cash flow in the second half of September this year and that the company was considering a set of measures to stabilise payment of salaries.
