Ukraine Hybrid Mail Service Goes Live
24 January 2010 - Sarah Sharpe
The Ukrainian Postal Service (Ukrposhta) has begun offering a hybrid mail service as part of its online services.
According to Ukrposhta, users will require a minimum of Pentium II / Celeron 300 MHz, 32M RAM, 2G HDD, Windows 98 / Me/XP/2000), connected to the Internet at speeds of 24 kbps, the smart card of the National system of mass electronic payments (NSMEP) smart card reader NSMEP. The service is limited to 300 words or 3000 characters.
Almost all European postal operators now offer hybrid or digital mail services. Hellmail editor Steve Lawson said:
"We recently ran a feature on the future of paperfree mail and hybrid is a service that succesfully bridges digital and traditional mail services. The shift towards wholly digital mail services is, I suspect, not too far away although there will always be a need for hard copy, particularly for the legal profession.
"It is however encouraging that European postal operators are responding well to the need to provide mail services that are more immediate and working in sympathy with electronic communications which have lets face it, been eroding the profitability of operators in more recent years. Certainly Ukrposhta like many other operators, recognises the importance of delivering such services and under their own brand which I am sure is already a recognised and trusted service with Ukrainian citizens."
