Hellmail, the postal industry news site has launched a podcast service.

The site, which covers postal news from across Europe and is widely read by postal operators, industry practitioners, advice groups and consultants, was formed five years ago. It has developed into a busy internet web site which tries to unravel the complexities of mail liberalisation as well as provide useful information for both business and domestic mail users.

Steve Lawson, editor for Hellmail said:

"We have for over a year now, included an 'Editors Comment' alongside news and information but we always felt that comment was difficult to place, particularly when controversial. The podcasts will support our extensive news and rss service and there will be a wider selection of podcasts available including a weekly summary of postal business news too. Regular readers can either listen online or download to an MP3 player or mobile phone and catch the weeks news on their way to or from work. The podcasts would also be a fantastic addition for regulars that either struggle with print or are visually impaired."

The first podcast, "Are Post Office Consultations A Sham?" is already available, and looks at the way in which post offices are being closed, the relationship between Royal Mail and Post Office Ltd, and how much input local communities have had on the process.

"This does open up all kinds of possibilities and will enable us to produce tightly-edited features covering a wide variety of topics with interviews and vox pops. We are also investing in high-quality digital recording and mixing equipment which will easily match broadcast standards. Postal Liberalisation still has a long way to go, and there are only a handful of countries that have really pushed ahead on opening their postal markets to competitors. It has not been without problems either, and we hope to focus on all these issues." said Lawson.
